'The Perfectionist' Sketches by bumble-boo 'The Perfectionist' Sketches by bumble-boo
Edit: Thanks guys!! It really helped me. :) I am halfway done now so I don't need anymore opinions, if you want to of course still you are allowed to, but I probably won't be changing much now. I really appreciate the help!!

I need help arghhhh... So I need to do this assignment for tomorrow (I am good at procrastinating) and I have boiled it down to these three ideas! But I am not sure which one to do... Obviously these are very rough.

Which one says "Perfectionist" most to you? Do any of the make sense? Tell me what you think and why you think it, how do you interpret it?

1st one: I am probably going to use more like the composition on the bottom where the main bird in the foreground is larger.

2nd one: I am having trouble because it looks like the orb thing... you can't tell if they are eating it or spitting it up. I want it to look like they are spitting it up, how could I do that?? :(

3rd one: No comments for this one I don't think.

Please let me know what you think!! :( I am a terrible student.

Aah, these all look very interesting! Pity I wasn't in time to give you an actually helpful opinion. Anyway! I like them all, they all have something interesting to tell. :) It's always nice to see people's project sketches. :3

I like #2 I guess to make it to make it look more like the orbs are coming from the person make sure the other orbs that are already out are in a pattern that would make sense if they had just come out of the person.

Yeah! I ended up doing the second one, I think that it's turning out okay but I've been staring at it for hours so it's a little hard to tell argh.

The first one, definitely. The main nest is well kept and tidy and the others are dishevelled and messy.

Aww the first one was way better. You should at least make it a print. Or give me permission to do it haha.

Well the idea comes across but I think it is too simple, we will see if I made a mistake once I see what my teacher says hahaha.

I really like the first one. The second one comes across more slowly, and I'm not sure I actually get how the third one represents perfectionism. I think if you did the first one it would be really cute, and it's definitely in your style! :) If you wanted more of a challenge, you could go a little more towards realism with the birds? I really like how the "perfectionist" nest looks patterned though! :)

I like the first one too, but I went with the second one! Yeah the third one is not refined enough, I wanted to go with the idea of nature creating perfect cycles and stuff like that. :) But it's not clear enoughhh... but yeah! Yeah I was thinking of doing more realistic birds if I did it because I always draw them too simplified hahaha.

SECOND.

though compositionally it could use a little tweaking, this is the best.

and the best way to make it clear that someone's chucking, shift the posture.

down, not up. with the mouth open and something spilling downwards, be it bile or an orb, the mind perceives it as leaving the body, whereas with your head tilted back or up, the mind sees it as swallowing or consuming whatever is there.

I like the idea of the first one, it says most about perfectionism.

The second one could look more like spitting up as long as the orb is more out of the mouth than in.

The third looks good, but doesn't portray your concept clearly.

I say go with the last one beCAUSE you don't have any comments for it.. usually when I draw something I have no idea why I do it... but I research it later and find something that fits it
Rabbits have a lot of symbolism, though I don't know how it would connect/apply to "perfectionist", unless there's more than one denotation to that word that I'm not getting..
The fact that you enclosed the rabbit and fox chasing it in a mother rabbit's womb(?), is like the cycle of some type of rebirth; rabbits are "innocent" = "perfect"? and fox could be the sinner/trickster/bad omen... and then something something I have no idea where this is going. But yeah =_= that;s what I got from it

But I originally thought the second fit too, I just can't explain it myself..

It's true but this is all about thinking and concepts, and if I do something that does not come across clearly, I will get a terrible mark! It's fun to draw things and later find out meaning behind them, but the reason I posted them without much explanation, is simply because I want to see how people interpret them, because getting the idea across is the most important part. :)

I ended up doing the second one, I hope it's readable once I am done with it. :)

I don't really get the perfectionism in any of them. D: But in the second one the person looks like they're in pain, and I think people who are very perfectionist pain themselves and put themselves through misery to achieve their desired result. I see it as a dark thing, so I like that one. You could put slime/drool all over the ball(like, enough that it drips down to the fingers) to make it look like it has come out of the mouth. If it were going in, there would only be drool near the mouth and not at all at the other end.

Well, the first one seems more worked, but instead of perfectionism I can see a little envy from the other birds, and could portrait perfectionism as a good thing (and I see that you really want to portrait as a bad thing), perhaps you could still use this idea if the little birds look sad or something alike.

The second one, I really like the idea and I think it's an approach I wouldn't have imagine to portrait perfectionism. I think that some broken orbs in the floor would look nice, like this person broke them because they weren't "perfect", also the idea of the orb being eaten doesn't look bad to me (it doesn't lose the meaning) 'cause I would think that this person thinks he will be perfect or complete without realising that it's hurting him. If you continue with the idea of spitting it out, I believe it would be better to draw the orb a little more outside the mouth, saliva would emphasize the idea of it splitting apart.

The third one looks like the cycle of life, but I don't feel the perfectionism quite right on it.

I'm hope I haven't confused you or something x_X

Thanks!! I actually did end up adding some saliva and more out of the mouth, so I think it kinda worked out. :) I am not overly happy with the image, but I am really grateful you took the time to write me a message! :D Thanks so much, and don't worry, it wasn't confusing! Also you are the only one who got the life cycle one, haha! I kinda wanted to say that nature is perfect and creates perfect cycles to deal with how things are sustained etc. :)

YAY!!! Now that you explain it to me I found that it really had a feeling of perfection hahaha XD

i consider everything perfect in itself (and the contrary too!)...
so i think of a more surreal perfectionism: for example a fox did with the shadow of hands of mother nature, who eats a rabbit and so on....
or something self-referenced, like a mirror which reflects different from reality... ( for exemple a normal table and a table with one leg shorter and a book to balance)
or a concept like this [link] . a perfect doubt, indeed...

your first idea is good, but too "politically-correct", i think...
the second might be a man trying to guess and say a word at the same time he hears on the radio... (it happens sometime....)

anyway good luck for your assignement... you'll definitely have something "perfect" for your style...

Well, I like the 2nd one better, personally!!
Suggestion for makin' it look like it's spitting it up, make him have a more arched position, yet having him face upwards as he's already doing. Also, have him hug his stomach, like one would do when vomiting, and add a bit of saliva n such around the rim of the mouth! Of course, up to YOUR judging.

Hope you choose for the best and you do great =D

I'm really leaning towards the second one. I also agree with *jinguj about the person hunching down more to make look like it's spitting. But now that I think about it, when I'd see it hunching down I'd think it was throwing up, maybe repulsed by being a perfectionist.
And I dunno what you were gonna do with the circles hanging from the ceiling, but I was thinking clocks. Since perfectionists obsess about time/being punctual(?).
I dunno. Those are my suggestions, hope it helped.

clocks sounds good too, people tend to get crazy around clocks haha. and you're right, hunching down makes it something very unwanted, so probably not a good solution.

That does help, thanks!! Basically the ones in the background are "failures" imperfections looming over the perfectionist, who is being destroyed by trying to be perfect. They created something perfect but it's destroying them because it's impossible to be perfect, that was kinda my idea!

:icontipstapstip:
TipsTapsTip Featured By Owner Oct 13, 2010
that is a good idea, but then, I wonder how you'd give off the impression that the other orbs are "failures".
maybe they could have cracks in them, like the person? like trial and error, each time the person makes one orb, the more the person breaks, and in turn the orbs do too? and each one gives off a different glow than the other, while the orb coming out of the person's mouth is the brightest, but still has just one crack in it?

I hope that made sense. but they're just suggestions. :)
